David Tothill died after being found in a critical condition at his home in Whitchurch, Cardiff, on 5 July 2009.

Both men are aged 22 and from the Whitchurch area, said South Wales Police.

They appeared before Cardiff magistrates court and were remanded in prison. Three other men were released without charge.

Mr Tothill, the youngest of four brothers, was found at his ground floor flat in Gwaun Close in Whitchurch and died in hospital the following day.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, assaulted the 10-year-old boy on waste ground near a Dundee housing estate over a two-year period.

He was detained for two years after a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh convicted him of sodomy and indecency.

Judge Lord Brailsford said there was little alternative to the custodial sentence because the teenager had refused to acknowledge his guilt.

At an earlier trial, jurors found him guilty of two charges of sodomy and another two charges of indecency, all committed in the same area between July 2006 and September 2008.

Under supervision

When the allegations surfaced last year, they caused outrage in the local community.

The boy’s family were eventually driven from their home by vigilantes who smashed windows at the family home.

During the earlier trial, the victim described to the court via a CCTV link how he had pleaded with the older boy: “Stop it, stop it.”

He said he was eight or nine at the time of the assaults and that his abuser had done things to him which were “disgusting and sore.”

Lord Brailsford made an order keeping the 15-year-old under supervision for a further three years after his detention sentence has ended.

The boy’s name has also been added to the sex offenders register.

A 60-year-old woman was said to have been injured in an incident in a park near Harehill Road in the Bridge of Don area of Aberdeen on Wednesday morning.

Ryan Yates, 29, appeared from custody at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Thursday.

He made no plea or declaration, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

Mitchell Dolphin, 51, was convicted last month of three charges of sexual assault and seven counts of lewd and libidinous behaviour.

The offences took place between 1986 and 2008 while he was a coach at the Lo-Gy Centre, Loanhead.

Dolphin had denied all the charges at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that 25-year-old Gary Gorman stabbed Bernard Hagen six times and left him dying in the street.

The court heard that his uncle, Michael Gorman, 44, stopped Mr Hagen’s friend James Harkin from coming to his aid.

Both men were convicted of killing Mr Hagen between Johnston Avenue and Fleming Avenue.

Gary Gorman, along with his brother Stephen, 23, and mother Ann, 46, were also convicted of attempting to murder Mr Hagen’s son Sean, 24, by throwing a petrol bomb at him and setting him on fire on 6 July, 2002 at Boyle Street and Fleming Avenue, in Clydebank.

Albert John McVeigh of Moyadam Close in Parkgate, near Antrim, admitted eight charges of gross indecency and 10 of indecent assault.

All three girls were aged between six and eight years old when they were abused between 2006 and 2008.

The mothers of two of his victims have said the prison term was not enough.

The mother of the girl who suffered the most prolonged abuse said “no amount of time is going to take away the pain that he has caused to this family”.

The mother whose daughter has special needs due to a brain condition said she was “completely and utterly disappointed” with the sentence.

Judge David Smyth said: “I say to the parents that I can understand your frustration and your alarm and concern, but one of the troubles is that one has to reflect that there can be worse cases than this.”

McVeigh was ordered to sign the police sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

The woman was attacked shortly after 1230 BST by a man near Cedar Avenue.

Her attacker has been described as being 5ft 8ins tall and aged in his early 20s, with blond hair.

Police said that the man was wearing red training shoes and was carrying a glass jar.

Tom Holt, 36, from May Hill in Gloucestershire, was found dead in the River Frome at Avenbury, on 7 October.

Petra Stokes, 25, and Shaun Stokes, 31, of Hasnett Road, Ledbury, appeared at Hereford Magistrates’ Court.

The couple, both charged with murder, were remanded in custody to appear at crown court on 22 October.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out, but the exact cause of Mr Holt’s death has yet to be established.

Desmond Thorpe was found dead at his temporary address in Limerick Close in Ipswich on 10 August.

A 15-year-old girl and Paul Clarke, 41, formerly of Mountbatten Court, Ipswich, have both been charged with murder.

They are due to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Friday, a police spokeswoman said.

Brian Clayton, 45, of Chelmsley Wood, West Midlands, was last seen in the town at about 1525 BST on Wednesday.

He was serving a 25-year sentence at Featherstone Prison near Wolverhampton for murdering a man in a fight in 1984.

Detectives said he could be hiding in the Birmingham or Solihull area and warned people not to approach him.

Clayton was in Stafford on an escorted prisoner visit to prepare for his impending release, Staffordshire Police said.

The first escape

He was jailed in 1984 for murdering a man during a drunken brawl in Birmingham.

Clayton was released on licence from his murder sentence for the first time in 2005 but was convicted of robbery and sent back to prison.

In 2007 he absconded from Sudbury Open prison in Derbyshire. It took police seven weeks to capture him on that occasion.

Police believe he may have returned to the Chelmsley Wood area of Solihull where he is from.

Tattooed arms

Chf Insp Mark Riley said: “Clayton had no affinity with Stafford, but we can’t rule out the fact that he may still be in the area, or may have travelled to Birmingham or further afield.”

Clayton is described as white, about 5ft 9ins tall, of average build with cropped brown hair and green eyes.

He was last seen outside Boots in Market Square, Stafford, and has tattoos on his arms and hand and a Birmingham accent, the force said.

He is considered potentially dangerous and anyone who sees him is asked not to approach him but to dial 999 immediately.
